LFF Grantee Update: Inaugural Heritage Trail Sign Installed in Macon County

The vision for the Macon County African American Heritage Trail is to inspire conversation, expand understanding, and contribute to a better society.
The Heart of Illinois Community Foundation (HICF) in Decatur, IL recently announced a ribbon cutting ceremony for the very first sign on the new Macon County African American Heritage Trail. The informational sign honors WWII veteran Ellsworth Dansby, Jr. and the remarkable contributions of the Dansby family to the Decatur area. From their deep roots of service to their commitment to education and opportunity, their story continues to inspire future generations. The ceremony will be held on September 23rd at 9:30 a.m. at the new Ellsworth Dansby Jr. Magnet School.
The new Macon County heritage trail is the signature project of the HICF Untold Stories committee, with grant funding provided by the Lumpkin Family Foundation. Plans for the trail include the installation of more historical markers, points of pride, and murals. The trail’s mission is to educate today’s residents and visitors about the rich cultural history of people whose stories have been largely unrecognized. The vision for the trail is to inspire conversation, expand understanding, and contribute to a better society.
HICF Executive Director, Natalie Beck, had this to say about LFF’s committment to discovering local Untold Stories:
“Words can’t express how thankful we are for your support – this trail would have never been a reality without the virtual presentation [on the Champaign County trail] you hosted featuring Jayne DeLuce (Experience Champaign). And of course, the continued Untold Stories grant funding from your foundation. This work is one of the most meaningful and enjoyable parts of my job and will be a bright spot for our community.”

The Macon County African American Heritage Trail also unveiled its first commissioned mural by Decatur artist, Antonio Burton, aka Toni Picasso, ALB Artwork. “Practice Flight,“ at Ellsworth Dansby Jr. Magnet School, is hoped to be a source of inspiration for students and the community.
In 2024, the Heart of Illinois Community Foundation (HICF) announced Untold Stories, a $120,000 community engagement program to bring to life and share stories of underrepresented people in Macon County. The HICF is one of only four Illinois foundations that received matching grant funds from The Lumpkin Family Foundation. Decatur Earthmover Credit Union and Healing Illinois also provided funding for the program. In 2025, Untold Stories received additional support from both The Lumpkin Family Foundation and Healing Illinois, a partnership between the Illinois Department of Human Services and The Field Foundation of Illinois.
